Ok so i tried to sum it up in the question.My laptop was running .avi files fine untill two days ago but now i get sound but a no picture (black screen).Ive read other peoples solutions and they all say the person needs to download a new codec. ive done this before and Gspot tells me ive got it installed to but the error is quieting happening.Could it be the video driver thats needs refreshing? ive heard that said aswell but have no idea how to do it?Thanks for your help, Mark

Codec prob just become corrupted. Re-install it…There is another program called SHERLOCK that will check the installation a little more throughly than G-Spot does.

    If the other solution mentioned doesnt work try another codec pack e.g. vista codecs or xp codecs (which ever OS you have). In my experience this pack has been the most usefull and fully equiped and its free!

    have you confirmed your windows are genuine so you can get updates because the updates for windows media player are licensed by Microsoft.
    Download this tool if you have not yet confirmed your windows genuine….just download it and that’s all…job done.
