Codecs are required to play videos, in a video there are 2 parts, the Codec is what compresses the code into video, file types are what the software reads first to see if its compatible.

Video and audio are encoded. The coded is basically the “scheme” by which the particular movie was encoded. (enCOer/DECoder) The program that plays the movie looks at the codec file to see how to decode it.
Nero has codecs that handle MPEG4 video.
AVI isn’t a codec, it’s a multimedia container format first introduced by Microsoft in 1992.
