My window media player will not play my video file but will play my music and it holding saying ” Window media player cannot play the file.The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.”What can I do and what does this mean?

try the free program VLC it works on next to all operating systems (including windows) and is very popular it should be able to play the file http://www.videolan.org/vlc/If it cannot it is likely you need a program like divx or xvid to play that video registering but without knowing anything about the particular file your trying to play I could not say for sure.

I don’t know, whether you read questions asked by others, because then you can see, that lots of people have the same ploblem. You need to download several different codecs. My advise is to download the free media player Gomplayer. It playes anything without having to download codecs.

yeah i had that too! microsoft does not give free codec for windows media player, i know it sucks, but its windows!
u need a decoder…with mines, when i installed power dvd 5.
and then when i attempted to open up windows media player, it played the DVD!! without installing the decoder for windows media player, probably because it shares the files or something.
if you like install power dvd, or nero showtime, open up windows media player, or open up the video file using wmp, and see if it will play the video file
